Observer - Kevin Koenig Keep me anonymous if published - no Location (general area) - Alta Diablo Latitude Longitude Date (yyyymmdd) - 20240310 Time - 10:30am Road conditions to area - Clear Temperature - 50 Sky - clear (no clouds) Wind speed - Light (1-16mph Flags/twigs in motion) Wind direction - not observed Wind direction in degrees Slope aspect - East Aspect in degrees Slope angle - 32 Elevation - 9600 Snow depth - 3’ Boot/ Ski penetration - 4” Precipitation - None Activity recent avalanches - yes Brief description - Two wet avalanches, D2 in size, on the east bowl of Alta Diablo were observed. One was covering up recent tracks, start was unknown. The second was triggered by a ski track that cut across the east face on 32 degree slope. They both looked like they had occurred the day before. Whumphing noises, shooting cracks. collapsing - yes Rapid warming - yes Obvious avalanche path - yes Terrain trap - no Comment - The 3/9 report seems pretty accurate for danger zones and what we witnessed. However, on true north faces and areas shaded by trees, good and consolidated snow remains down to 8400’. There was rideable coverage on the south fork trail to the fire road crossing.
