Baldy - Bently Cliffs area Date (yyyymmdd) 20170121 Time Morning Slope aspect North/ North East Slope angle NA Elevation 7,500 Boot/ Ski penetration SP - 6 in Precipitation 18" in the last 24 hours Activity, recent avalanches Yes Obvious avalanche path yes Terrain trap yes Comment This was a N/NE aspect at about 7500 feet elevation. This was a Hard Slab that was probably triggered from a snow push from the cat. There were numerous 1-1.5 foot crowns throughout the area; however, with the addition of some rain on the snowpack along with a clear cold snow seemed to be less reactive. We were only penetrating 6 inches of the snowpack even though we had 18" of new snow. I didn't have enough time to dig a pit or crown profile. I also didn't get a chance to take some SP2 samples as we were slammed most of the day. I didn't see any evidence of slides in the South Bowl area. This particular slide ran for almost 600 vertical feet and over a 30 foot cliff band. The bed surface was the new and old snow interface. The snow became cohesive in this area thanks to some rain that fell at the end of the storm and then a few hours of clear skies. Publish this observation Yes I would like this observation Published |
