Snowpack Observer Tim Kang Keep me anonymous if published no Location (general area) Ski Hut to Mt Baldy Date (yyyymmdd) 01/28/17 Time 6:30 am Road conditions to area Road cleared Sky clear (no clouds) Wind speed Moderate (17-25mph Small trees sway/ flags stretched) Wind direction not observed Slope aspect not observed Precipitation None Comment The area below the hut is deep snow throughout, and warmer and softer terrain than from the hut and above. Below the hut there were gullies with loose snow and sliding debris, along with large ice blocks falling from trees, however it deed seem like most of the ice from trees had fallen that day I was there. Above the hut was much cooler, and the snow became firmer the higher you get. Towards the top of the bowl, snow patches were developing surface ice the size of a small plate. There are areas that are soft next to areas that are firm, and possibly undetectable to an untrained eye. The surface on the bowl looked soft enough for human weight and skiis to dig into the snow, but I could see much firmer ice developing in the coming week or so making it much more dangerous to ski the bowl. On the bowl, there are very thin patches of snow near larger rock formations. Winds on Sunday were coming from the NNE, and elevations near the top of the bowl, the summit, and down the ridge which leads down the traditional hut trail were extremely windy, but a warm wind, constant and heavy.
