Snowpack Observer Hans Ludwig Keep me anonymous if published no Location (general area) Cloudburst Summit (near Waterman) Date (yyyymmdd) 20170209 Time 1200 Road conditions to area Clear, damp in places Temperature 60° F (15° C) Sky few clouds (up to 2/8) Wind speed Light (1-16mph Flags/twigs in motion) Wind direction not observed Slope aspect not observed Elevation 7100 Snow depth 1' (30 cm) Boot/ Ski penetration 4" (10 cm) Precipitation None Activity, recent avalanches No Whumphing noises, shooting cracks. collapsing no Rapid warming yes Obvious avalanche path yes Terrain trap yes Comment There is widespread, free-flowing water out of rocks, onto the road. Soil is damp and spongey. In general, the snow is very soft (is F- even a hardness step?) and melting quickly. Southerly aspects of Waterman (8500') are too barren to ski. The bottom of Avalanche Canyon (6600) and W-aspect of the canyon were too patchy to ski. N & NE look better. Northerly aspects above 7500 looked in-general doable. N faces of Baldy looked real sweet with well over 1000 of good coverage. Snow hight was highly variable at these altitudes but never really much more than a foot and also patches of no snow. For sure it would be better up higher. Pray for snow! Publish this observation Yes I would like this observation Published |
