2022
Posted by Allen Giernet @ 6:51am
This summary applies to backcountry areas only.
The Bottom Line –
We ended 2021 with a significant sow storm and reports of widespread avalanche activity in the Mt. San Antonio region of the San Gabriel Mountains. Our concerns now will transition to Wet Slab Avalanches mainly on out Southern facing aspects E,SE,S,SW, W & NW below 9,000’. With warmer temperatures through the day each day this week and strong solar input Wet Snow Instabilities will increase through the day each day. This concern will transition into Wet Loose Avalanches through the next few days. Be aware of rap[idly warming temperatures through the day and changing conditions as you travel and change aspect/ elevation. Fast firm conditions will be probable in sun effected areas each morning as temperatures drop below freezing over night. Slide for life scenarios will be a concern especially on well traveled compacted snow. On Northern aspects lingering winds slaps should be healing but may still be possible to trigger in isolated areas. Be aware as you travel of a variety of conditions and changes in the snow as you travel through the mountains. Always travel with a partner and carry your avalanche safety equipment - Avalanche Transceiver, Shovel and Probe.
If you venture out please submit your observations to the avalanche center. All the
weather links and reports pages are working. Any info is helpful.
